Tokenized Treasuries on the XRP Ledger: A Growth Story Without a Price Boost?
The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is witnessing a surge in tokenized Treasuries, with a remarkable 8x growth in a year. This development is particularly intriguing given the conservative nature of U.S. Treasuries and the XRP network's ability to facilitate rapid and efficient transactions. However, the XRP price has been on a downward spiral, raising questions about the relationship between this growth and the token's value.
The Growth Story
In the past year, tokenized Treasuries on the XRP Ledger have experienced exponential growth, reaching over $500 million by April 2026. This surge is even more impressive when compared to the global tokenized Treasury market, which was already in the billions. The transfer volume in the first four months of 2026 alone exceeded the full-year volume of 2025, indicating active institutional usage.
Several key players have contributed to this growth. Ondo Finance's OUSG Treasury fund, backed by BlackRock's BUIDL fund, offers 24/7 minting and redemption. Zeconomy brought Guggenheim's tokenized commercial paper to the network, and OpenEden also issues assets on the ledger. Archax has committed to bringing $1 billion in tokenized assets to XRPL by mid-2026.
A significant milestone was achieved in May when JPMorgan, Mastercard, Ripple, and Ondo conducted the first cross-border, cross-bank redemption of a tokenized Treasury fund on the XRP Ledger, settling in under five seconds, a process that typically takes one to three business days.
The $4 Billion RWA Mystery
The XRP Ledger's total real-world assets (RWA) crossed $3 billion in early May and now top $4 billion. However, this figure is split into two categories: distributed assets and represented assets. While the latter are recorded on the ledger but held elsewhere, the distributed assets are actively held and moved by investors, making them more significant.
The JMWH energy token, issued by Justoken, accounts for a substantial portion of the total RWA, but it is held by a limited number of wallets and hasn't recorded any transfers in the past month. The Treasuries, however, are in the distributed bucket, indicating genuine market activity.
Why the Price Disconnect?
XRP holders often assume that network activity translates to token value. However, on the XRP Ledger, this correlation is not as straightforward. Tokenized Treasuries on XRPL do not require XRP purchases. Instead, they use Ripple's RLUSD stablecoin for minting and redemption, with XRP only covering network fees, which are minimal.
The growth in RWA has not significantly impacted the XRP price, as the token's value is not directly tied to these transactions. The growth primarily contributes to the ledger's credibility and Ripple's stablecoin business. For the XRP price to react, new demand sources are needed.
Connecting the Dots
The XRP Ledger's native lending protocol, XLS-66, paired with XLS-65 Single Asset Vaults, presents a potential solution. It would allow XRP holders to deposit their tokens into on-chain vaults, funding fixed-term loans to institutional borrowers. This could create a direct link between idle XRP and the growing tokenized assets, potentially attracting institutional capital.
Additionally, the XRP Ledger's built-in exchange and automated market makers could facilitate on-chain trading of tokenized assets, increasing XRP liquidity usage. However, current RWA transfer volume is not substantial enough to significantly impact a token with a $70 billion market cap.
Indirect Connections
Despite the direct connections, an indirect link is already in play. The growth in RWA has become a compelling argument for XRP, attracting regulated buyers. XRP ETFs have attracted over $1.43 billion since their launch in November 2025, and treasury companies are accumulating the token. Evernorth, the firm behind the Treasury dataset, is a public XRP treasury company, indicating institutional purchases.
The Future of XRP and Treasuries
The growth in tokenized Treasuries has not yet translated to the XRP price, but it is strengthening the ledger and Ripple's stablecoin business. The upside for XRP holders is indirect, as the growth supports the case for institutional adoption, ETF allocations, and treasury purchases. DTCC's inclusion of Ripple Prime in its tokenization working group is a significant development, positioning XRPL as a potential settlement rail.
The lending protocol's launch and on-chain trading of tokenized assets could be the turning point, providing XRP with a working role in the growing market. This could finally lead to a positive correlation between RWA growth and the XRP price, marking a significant milestone in the XRP ecosystem.
